Niche online retailer JMX Brands has been named a 2021 Next 1000 company by Digital Commerce 360, a trusted partner and source of research and data collection for many of the world’s top ecommerce brands for over 20 years.

The Next 1000 database ranks North American mid-sized online retailers by annual web sales. The Sarasota-based parent company of the largest online retailer of Amish furniture at www.dutchcrafters.com ranked 1286 overall and 28 in the primary merchandise category of housewares/home furnishings. This is a significant improvement for JMX Brands with last year’s ranking sitting at 1412 overall and 37 in the primary merchandise category.

Digital Commerce 360 states on their website that, “These top retailers sold a combined $13 billion online 2020, up 20% year over year.”

This is the ninth time JMX Brands has been named to a Digital Commerce 360 list. From 2012-2017, the small business was named to what was formerly known as Internet Retailer Magazine’s Mid-Market 500 lists. Most recently, JMX Brands was ranked on the 2019 and 2020 Next 1000 company lists.

JMX Brands has fostered growth and success with its DutchCrafters brand by utilizing search engine marketing and embracing the lift in ecommerce during the height of the pandemic.

“Our revenue growth has been the result of both internal and external factors as we continue to differentiate DutchCrafters, creating more distance from our direct competitors,” said CEO Jim Miller. “Internally, we’ve seen improvements in our search results due to an effort led by JMX Brands Director of Marketing Debra Gingerich along with Product Management and Innovation Manager Scott Anderson and CIO Miao Xue. This led to breakthrough success in the world of organic search, which catapulted us ahead of our competitors and was the biggest driver of revenues.”

Economists and industry experts suggest that ecommerce took a decade leap in a single year and predict that this change is permanent. Gingerich, Anderson, and Xue’s search engine optimization efforts combined with the increase in ecommerce caused JMX Brands revenues to soar. Miller believes DutchCrafters was simply in the right place at the right time.

The small business is also driven by its vision to deliver exceptional customer experience. For JMX Brands, this looks like investing in telephone and chat operators, improving post-purchase communications, introducing a no-hassle return policy, establishing financing options, and reimagining the in-store experience through a redesign in Sarasota.

“We were very proud when Newsweek recognized us as one of the Best Online Shops of 2021, because so much of the criteria was based on customer experience,” said Miller. “Consumers demand it, and companies who differentiate through customer experience will thrive.”

This strategy has included putting the mobile experience first, creating content with an emphasis on video, and growing the business’ presence on Amazon.

The small business has also embraced the complexities of working with small Amish and Mennonite woodshops where communications and culture intentionally slow down the furniture making and delivery process.

“We’ve innovated around that with better options menus on our website, chat support, and really strong personalization by phone. We unapologetically sell slow furniture on a fast platform,” said JMX Brands CEO Jim Miller.

JMX Brands, one of the largest ecommerce retailers of Amish furniture at www.DutchCrafters.com, also placed 45 in the housewares/homes furnishings category, up from 48 the previous year.

The average growth rate of the Second 500 companies was 14.9 percent for 2015, which made JMX Brand’s 40 percent growth even more impressive.

To stand out in a hyper-competitive environment, JMX Brands continued to improve website functionality, including better search and selection capabilities; added personalized email communications; and expanded its social media presence, participating on unique platforms such as Polyvore and Houzz.

JMX Brands understands the importance of building relationships, both with the 190 Amish furniture craft shops in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana and its customers. Just six months ago, JMX Brands expanded its Web-only presence to open a brick-and-mortar furniture store in Sarasota, FL.

“We are always looking at ways to improve the buying experience,” said Jim Miller, JMX Brands owner and CEO. “Whether that is speeding up the shipping process, providing online content that is informative for our customers’ lives, or offering a location for people to see the furniture first hand.”

JMX Brands made several lists of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States last year, including the 2015 Gulf Coast 500, Inc. 5000, and Internet Retailer 1000.

Internet Retailer Magazine Recognizes the Company’s Climb in Several Rankings During a Challenging Year

Sarasota, FL, July 14th, 2014 — For the third year in a row, Internet retailer JMX Brands was named to Internet Retailer Magazine’s Second 500, a highly-regarded ranking of the nation’s most promising E-tailers. Divided and arranged by sales volume, the list (as well as its sister list, the First 500) is a catalog of success stories to watch, and widely considered the most authoritative list of the Internet’s top brands.

By The Numbers:

In 2014, JMX Brands jumped to #926 on the list, up from #967 in 2013 and #944 in 2012. The company reported 2013 revenues of $3.8 million, which represented 107% growth over the previous year’s $1.8 million. It is this explosive growth rate that earned JMX Brands an enviable spot at #22 of the fastest growing companies included in the Second 500, and #18 of the fastest growing web-only retailers on the list (those retailers without a physical store). Additionally, JMX Brands ranked #54 on the list within its principal market of housewares and home furnishings, up from #56 last year.

The Path To Success:

Growth was largely due to breakthroughs in organic search, social media and content marketing for its flagship brand, DutchCrafters – the web’s largest source of Amish made furniture. DutchCrafters markets American-made indoor and outdoor furniture and crafts that are handcrafted by more than 120 Amish woodshops in Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The IR Second 500, as a group, represented $4.74 billion in online sales in 2013. The steady growth rate that the group enjoyed for the past decade has begun to slow in recent years, dropping to just 14.1% in 2013. That is a slower growth rate than the IR Top 500 (the nation’s 500 largest internet retailers), which grew at a rate of 17.1% in 2013. It is also slower than e-commerce growth as a whole, which dropped to 16.9% in 2013. This trend represents the difficulty that the Second 500 merchants face; both against their larger competitors, as well as against newcomers to the e-tail industry.

It seems that the merchants who were successful in 2013 grew because they focused on two things: innovation within their niche, and stellar customer service. According to Internet Retailer Magazine Associate Editor of Research Stefany Zaroban, “each of [the leading Second 500 merchants] is outmaneuvering competitors in some way. Many are growing by investing in their websites, making them eye-catching and easy and convenient to shop. Others are tapping into unmet demand with a niche product, selling in a new way or aggressively marketing to attract new customers.”

Indeed, a prime reason that Zaroban invited JMX Brands CEO Jim Miller to the stage at the Internet Retailer Conference and Exhibit in Chicago in June, the world’s largest internet retailer conference, was to share about ways in which JMX Brands has stayed ahead of the game. Miller spoke about his company’s relentless focus on its niche, leveraging core strengths by developing internal competencies and eliminating outsourced services, and an obsession with customer service. “In 2012, we remained true to ourselves by going back to basics with our products and services, and by diligent attention to the changing world of internet marketing. The result was superb growth in 2013 and continuation of that growth in 2014,” Miller said. Like many leaders on the list, JMX Brands has improved its website functionality, leveraged vendor relationships, and aggressively built social media presence on platforms such as Facebook and Pinterest.

Miller is optimistic about the company’s forecast. “We don’t expect that the three-digit growth will continue, but we do expect to see solid growth, above 30%, for the next several years. We’re doing better than that YTD in 2014, and are making investments in new hires and new initiatives that should set the stage for continued growth in 2015 as well. Our team is young, but talented and ripe with potential.”

Among the specifics on Miller’s 2014-2015 to-do list are enhanced customer accounts, a mobile-friendly website, a new mobile app, and additional staffing for competitive positioning and content development.

JMX Brands was established in 2003, and is headquartered in Sarasota, Florida, where the company employs twenty persons.

###
