How to Match Dining Chairs and Tables

Seth Carter 04/04/2025

Today, we’ll take a look at how to match the right dining chairs to a dining table. Much of this will depend on your personal preference and which direction you are taking your decor. However, we are here to provide tips and suggestions for various dining room furniture setups.

Should Your Dining Chairs Match Your Table?

Not unless you want them to match. The answer is up to you. Many people opt to go with an eclectic look or choose dining chair styles or colors that are not the same as their table. A clean uniform look with the same style, wood, and finish is wonderful, but it’s not the only option!

Match the Style and Color Schemes

One way to set up your dining room furniture decor is to make it all match. Pick the same style and color scheme for both the dining table and the dining chairs. It creates a uniform look for those who love a particular style or wood and finish combination.

This setup looks very well organized and done with purpose and intent. Many styles are popular choices that look great throughout the entire house!

Mix and Match Dining Chairs and a Table for an Eclectic Look

Frasier Crane would have loved the selection of dining room furniture at DutchCrafters. Frasier’s apartment was famous for its eclectic furniture selection on the Emmy-award winning show that ran for 11 seasons.

I can almost hear Frasier showing off his new Mid-Century Modern solid wood dining chairs and smugly bragging to his brother how “These are HANDCRAFTED by Amish Artisans in rural Ohio, Niles.”

If you find yourself relating to his father in the video above, then you should refer to section one and find matching styles, wood types, and stains.

Now, for those of you who fancy yourselves to be a mix-and-matcher like Frasier, we’ll address a few of the commonly asked questions about mismatching dining room furniture.

Do Wood Chairs Need to Match a Table?

No, wooden chairs do not necessarily have to match the table. They should be complementary in some way to each other and/or the surrounding decor.

Should Dining Chairs be Lighter or Darker than the Table?

Typically dining chairs should be the same or darker than the table. If you can make lighter colors work within the theme of your dining room decor, then go for it!

One effective way to mix and match is to choose the same or similar stains or finishes, and possibly even the same wood type, and then mix up the styles. Perhaps you love mission-style slatted chairs but would prefer farmhouse dining chairs at the table ends?

Having the same wood type and finish can bring different styles together as if they are united on the same team but playing different positions.

Personally, I have the same finish on all my dining furniture but choose a mix of styles. It reminds me of a chessboard; even though your key pieces are all shaped differently, they still look great together.

How to Make Mismatched Dining Chairs Work?

Strong contrasts or colors and styles that complement each other or other colors within the room are both popular ways of mixing dining chairs. Some choose the same color chairs with different styles or maybe even a dining bench.
