Understanding Kilowatt Hours (kWh)

You’ll need to understand the meaning of kilowatt-hours to calculate how much your electric fireplace will add to your electric bill.

Breaking Down Kilowatt Hours (kWh):

  • 1 kilowatt-hour = 1,000 watts used for one hour.
  • A 500-watt device running for two hours = 1 kWh because 500 watts × 2 hours = 1,000 watts in an hour (aka 1 kWh).
  • A 2,000-watt electric fireplace running for one hour equals 2 kWh.

Understanding Electric Fireplace Wattage

Most Amish electric fireplaces at DutchCrafters operate at 1,500 watts, a common wattage for electric fireplaces. The average cost per kilowatt-hour in the United States is $0.18. A kilowatt-hour is on a per-1,000-watt basis for every hour (explained in the previous section).

So, a 1,500-watt electric fireplace would be your kWh rate multiplied by 1.5 (for the 1,500 watts).

Calculating a 1,500 kWh Electric Fireplace Running for One Hour:

$0.18 x 1.5 = $0.27 per hour.

*The country’s average cost per kWh includes a wide range of electricity costs. Check your actual kWh costs with your power company.

What Does It Cost to Run an Electric Fireplace?

Electricity costs vary by location, but according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average cost of electricity in the U.S. was $0.18 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in August 2024. We will use $0.18 per kWh to demonstrate our examples below:

  • A 1,000-watt electric fireplace costs approximately $0.18 per hour to run.
  • A 1,500-watt electric fireplace costs approximately $0.27 per hour to run.
  • A 2,000-watt electric fireplace costs around $0.36 per hour.

To estimate your monthly cost, multiply the cost per hour by the number of hours you use your fireplace each month.

Calculating Electric Fireplace Costs Per Month

Below are examples of how to calculate your monthly electric fireplace costs based on $0.18 per kWh. We have to account for the following numbers:

  1. Electric Fireplace Wattage
  2. Cost per kWh hour
  3. Hours Per Month
  • Running a 1,000-watt electric fireplace for 15 hours per month at $0.18 per kWh costs just $2.70.
