How do you attract butterflies to a butterfly house? While the house provides shelter, attracting butterflies to your garden is best done by planting nectar-rich flowers (like coneflowers, butterfly bush, zinnia, milkweed) that bloom throughout the season. A shallow water source with pebbles for landing is also beneficial. Place the house within or near these attractive plantings. Do they actually stay in the house? Butterflies don't "nest" in these houses like birds do. They primarily use them for temporary shelter during periods of inclement weather (rain, strong winds, cold snaps) or as a safe overnight roosting spot. Some species may even use them for overwintering. What do they do in the butterfly house? Inside, butterflies seek refuge from harsh environmental conditions. The narrow slits and interior rough surfaces provide a secure, dry, and relatively warm place to rest, rehydrate, or ride out storms. How do they get inside the house? The houses are designed with narrow, vertical slits. Butterflies can easily slip through these openings with their wings folded, while the small size of the slits helps to keep out larger predators. Where should you place a butterfly house to attract them to it? Position the house in a sunny, sheltered area, ideally facing south or southeast to catch the morning sun. Place it near nectar-producing plants and away from strong prevailing winds. Mount it securely to a post, tree, or fence, typically 4-6 feet off the ground. Does the color of the house matter? Do they like certain colors? While butterflies are drawn to the vibrant colors of flowers (especially red, yellow, orange, purple, and pink) for nectar, the color of the house itself is less critical for attracting them to the shelter. Its primary function is to offer refuge. You can choose a color that best complements your garden aesthetics! What kinds of butterflies will live in the house? Overwintering species such as Monarchs (especially during migration), Mourning Cloaks, Question Marks, and Comma butterflies are most likely to utilize a butterfly house for prolonged shelter during colder months. During warmer periods, any butterfly might seek temporary refuge from bad weather.Interesting Facts about Butterflies:
- Complete Metamorphosis: Butterflies undergo a fascinating transformation through four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult.
- Taste with Their Feet: Butterflies have chemoreceptors on their feet, allowing them to "taste" plants to determine if they are suitable for laying eggs or feeding.
- Short Lifespans: Most adult butterflies live for only 2-4 weeks, though some migratory species, like the Monarch, can live up to 9 months.
- Cold-Blooded: As cold-blooded insects, butterflies rely on external heat sources (like the sun) to regulate their body temperature and enable them to fly.
- Important Pollinators: Butterflies play a vital role in pollination, transferring pollen between flowers as they feed on nectar, aiding in plant reproduction.

The tray feeders arrived without damage (sooner than expected) thanks to good packaging by DutchCrafters.
The product quality was excellent. I was impressed and I highly recommend these feeder trays. However, if you have large animals visiting, I recommend making some modifications.
I had a large raccoon get up in one of the trays and its weight was enough to pull the perforated metal out of its slot in the side rail. I took the tray apart, straightened up the metal, and then put it back together. I then reinforced the bottom with 1/2" X 2" painted oak boards (I didn't have polly lumber) and attached them with 1/8" X 1.5" epoxy coated exterior wood screws. For good measure, I added two 1/8" X 2" screws in each leg for additional support.
Again, I highly recommend this product. Just know they aren't designed to carry the weight of large animals.
