Family owned and operated, the Canal Dover Collection was started in 1989 by a father and son team.

Having grown considerably since its inception, a team of talented craftsmen use their fine skills combined with modern machinery to craft the finest wood furniture for Canal Dover. Stains are wiped by hand and taken into a state-of-the-art finishing booth for the highest quality finish.

The goal for woodworkers who craft this collection is to offer well-made furniture that’s built with excellence. They care about the details, like using the best catalyzed conversion varnish to protect your new wood furniture. They offer a variety of wood species and finish colors all sculpted, manipulated and finished with expertise. They build one piece at a time versus mass production in an assembly line. There are Amish and Mennonite craftsmen on their team, skilled artisans who have passed down an authentic work ethic through the generations.

Canal Dover has seen continued growth over the years, including a 12,000 sq. ft. addition to their shop in 1999 and 32,000 sq ft addition in 2005.

Wood Choices

This large collection of wood furniture includes stunning beds and bedroom storage pieces, as well as everything you need for dining room or kitchen, offering a variety of dining chairs, tables and storage pieces.

There are smooth shades of brown maple used, as well as prized cherry wood with its even grain and warm reddish-brown color. Cherry wood brings its own character, with some mineral streaks or sapwood present, and it darkens with exposure to light to display a lovely reddish-brown patina.

Strong rich oak is among the wood types found here, the most popular among wood types used for furniture. Oak displays a strong wood grain pattern, offering even more to look at in addition to the fine form of the furniture.

Quarter sawn white oak is also available. This is produced when the oak log is turned and cut in a unique way that causes distinct patterns to emerge, including lines, flakes and unique figures in the wood.

High Performance Wood Furniture

Many look to wood furniture for the durability and beauty it offers, but also for the performance. Canal Dover designs are high performers, with Amish craftsmanship adding to the function.

These are features you’ll find in pieces from this collection that make your furniture work harder and better thanks to their detailed craftsmanship.

Dovetailed Bed Rail Slats: Slats are made of solid wood and dovetailed, which means they create the strongest joints possible to support your bed.

Dovetailed Drawers: It’s the same idea for the drawers of dressers and chests. Being dovetailed means they will support more weight with ease, and they won’t come apart after a few years of use.

Undermount Soft Close Drawer Slides: These drawer slides are a luxury to use. They create a smooth gliding motion for each drawer and practically close themselves.

Catalyzed Conversion Varnish: This varnish is the best, providing resistance to water and scratches. It contributes to a tough, highly durable finish so you can enjoy your furniture more and worry about it less.

Mortise and Tenon Joinery: These are the strongest joints used in wood furniture. They won’t come loose; instead they keep providing support.

You can rely on wood furniture from the Canal Dover Furniture Collection, providing a luxurious look that’s backed by all the elements of a quality build.

Choosing a Table Size

When shopping for a dining table, consider the following first:

  • How often you host or need seating for more than 4.
  • What other uses (i.e. outside dining) you envision for your table.
  • The size of the room.

Second, to get an idea of the maximum size table your space will allow, measure the room.

Fold a sheet to the approximate size and shape you envision for your table and lay it on the floor. Measure from the wall to the sheet to get a visual idea of what size table will fit comfortably. To provide adequate room for people sitting at the table to get up, push their chair back, and walk around the table, aim for at least 48” from the edge of the table to the nearest wall or a piece of furniture.

Measuring Table Top Image

Tabletop Size

  • For tabletop area, allow a minimum of 24” per guest, (but 30” is better for more elbow room).
  • For rectangular tables (the most popular table shape), add 12” of depth to each end for guests seated at the head and foot of the table.
  • For leg tables, measure for the additional 12” from either the head or foot of the table to the first person sitting on the right or left.

Table Width

Most dining tables are 36” wide, which leaves room for place settings and serving pieces. Keep in mind that dining tables wider than 48” will be more difficult to reach across.

Table Shapes

The size you choose will be determined by the shape that best fits your needs and style.

Rectangular: Classic and versatile. Most popular dining table shape.

Rectangular Table Size

  • 72” long seats eight comfortably, with one person at each end.
  • 96” long seats 10 comfortably, with one person at each end.
  • 120” long seats 12 comfortably, with one person at each end.

Amish Falcon Trestle Table

The Amish Falcon Trestle Table in the popular rectangular shape is shown in cherry with an onyx base.

Round: Create a casual and intimate atmosphere instantly.

Round Table Top

  • 36”- 48” diameter will comfortably seat four.
  • 60” diameter will comfortably seat six.
  • 72” diameter will comfortably seat eight.

Amish Ensenada Single Pedestal Table

The Amish Ensenada Single Pedestal Table is available with a 48” or 54” diameter and standard or counter height.

Oval: No sharp edges. Offer flexibility for guests seated at ends, bringing them together for easy conversation.

Oval Table Size

  • 60” Oval table can seat up to 6.
  • 97” Oval table can seat up to 8.
  • 102” Oval table can seat up to 8.
  • 120” Oval table can seat up to 12.

Amish Normandy Pedestal Dining Table

Some round tables turn into oval tables when leaves are added, like our Normandy Pedestal Table shown in our Sarasota, FL store.

Dining tables with extensions are a convenient way to seat more people on special occasions. Check out the four main types in action in our handy table extension video.

Table Height

Tables can be built in three heights: Table, counter, and bar.

Table Heights

  • Most standard dining tables are 29”- 31” high. This traditional height is more formal and is ideal for hosting regular family dinners and celebrations. Since this is the most common height, you’ll find the widest variety of styles.

Amish Bradbury Double Pedestal Dining Room Table

The Amish Bradbury Double Pedestal Dining Room Table can be custom-made in several sizes to fit your needs.
  • Counter height tables are 34”- 36” high, and create a more casual dining experience. The added height creates the illusion that the table takes up less space.

Amish Ripple Back Pedestal Table

The Amish Ripple Back Pedestal Table in counter height pairs beautifully with Amish Ripple Back Bar Stools.
  • Bar height tables are generally 40”- 42” high. They create a casual atmosphere, and their height and width make them ideal for small spaces.
