Additional Information

Choosing a Table Size

When shopping for a dining table, consider the following first:

  • How often you host or need seating for more than 4.
  • What other uses (i.e. outside dining) you envision for your table.
  • The size of the room.

Second, to get an idea of the maximum size table your space will allow, measure the room.

Fold a sheet to the approximate size and shape you envision for your table and lay it on the floor. Measure from the wall to the sheet to get a visual idea of what size table will fit comfortably. To provide adequate room for people sitting at the table to get up, push their chair back, and walk around the table, aim for at least 48” from the edge of the table to the nearest wall or a piece of furniture.

Measuring Table Top Image

Tabletop Size

  • For tabletop area, allow a minimum of 24” per guest, (but 30” is better for more elbow room).
  • For rectangular tables (the most popular table shape), add 12” of depth to each end for guests seated at the head and foot of the table.
  • For leg tables, measure for the additional 12” from either the head or foot of the table to the first person sitting on the right or left.

Table Width

Most dining tables are 36” wide, which leaves room for place settings and serving pieces. Keep in mind that dining tables wider than 48” will be more difficult to reach across.

Table Shapes

The size you choose will be determined by the shape that best fits your needs and style.

Rectangular: Classic and versatile. Most popular dining table shape.

Rectangular Table Size

  • 72” long seats eight comfortably, with one person at each end.
  • 96” long seats 10 comfortably, with one person at each end.
  • 120” long seats 12 comfortably, with one person at each end.

Amish Falcon Trestle Table

The Amish Falcon Trestle Table in the popular rectangular shape is shown in cherry with an onyx base.

Round: Create a casual and intimate atmosphere instantly.

Round Table Top

  • 36”- 48” diameter will comfortably seat four.
  • 60” diameter will comfortably seat six.
  • 72” diameter will comfortably seat eight.

Amish Ensenada Single Pedestal Table

The Amish Ensenada Single Pedestal Table is available with a 48” or 54” diameter and standard or counter height.

Oval: No sharp edges. Offer flexibility for guests seated at ends, bringing them together for easy conversation.

Oval Table Size

  • 60” Oval table can seat up to 6.
  • 97” Oval table can seat up to 8.
  • 102” Oval table can seat up to 8.
  • 120” Oval table can seat up to 12.

Amish Normandy Pedestal Dining Table

Some round tables turn into oval tables when leaves are added, like our Normandy Pedestal Table shown in our Sarasota, FL store.

Dining tables with extensions are a convenient way to seat more people on special occasions. Check out the four main types in action in our handy table extension video.

Table Height

Tables can be built in three heights: Table, counter, and bar.

Table Heights

  • Most standard dining tables are 29”- 31” high. This traditional height is more formal and is ideal for hosting regular family dinners and celebrations. Since this is the most common height, you’ll find the widest variety of styles.

Amish Bradbury Double Pedestal Dining Room Table

The Amish Bradbury Double Pedestal Dining Room Table can be custom-made in several sizes to fit your needs.
  • Counter height tables are 34”- 36” high, and create a more casual dining experience. The added height creates the illusion that the table takes up less space.

Amish Ripple Back Pedestal Table

The Amish Ripple Back Pedestal Table in counter height pairs beautifully with Amish Ripple Back Bar Stools.
  • Bar height tables are generally 40”- 42” high. They create a casual atmosphere, and their height and width make them ideal for small spaces.

About the Amish Woodworker

This Old Order Amish woodworker specializes in building dining tables and kitchen tables which allows them to offer so many designs and styles.  He believes in capturing the natural beauty of the hardwood and displays this in the table.  No two tables are identical due to the unique nature of the wood.  We consider each table that our Amish woodworkers build to be works of art.  This Amish woodworker recognizes that everything he creates and has is a gift from God.   These values show in the quality of his tables.  This woodworker is located in Northern Indiana and is passing his traditional furniture making techniques and values onto his children in this family run business.

How to decide on the hardwood and finish?

Choosing a wood and finish is probably the most important decision on your new furniture.  If you are not matching your wood and finish to existing dining room furniture then you should be sure to order our wood finish samples to help you with this decision.  We use the finest American harvest hardwoods and finishes available guaranteeing heirloom furniture.  This Trestle Table is shown in Quarter Sawn White Oak wood but you also have the option of choosing Red Oak, Cherry, Hard Maple, Hickory, Brown Maple, Rustic Cherry, Grey Elm or Walnut wood.  All hardwoods have different grain patterns which can create a difference in color.  These are what add to the beauty and charm of the wood and are not considered defects.  Because of this, the samples that you receive may have slight differences in color from your table when it arrives.  Be sure that when your new hardwood table arrives that you take care to maintain a humidity controlled home or business to prevent cracking or warping that can occur with wood tables.

Dining Table Features

  • The table is built with mortise and tenon construction for added strength.
  • This table top is a solid one-inch solid wood thickness and has a steam bent solid wood skirt.
  • Some minor assembly is required on this dining table.
  • Shapely curved trestle base.

Reviews

This was the most thorough and easy company I have dealt with. From start to finished delivery, they communicated and the table was exceptional.
Delivery was exceptional, very professional, and friendly. The quality is impeccable, above and beyond what we were expecting. Very well built and sturdy. It took longer than we expected, but it was well worth the wait. Everything fits together perfectly. The bench we ordered was not from the same group as the table and chairs, but with the wood and stain we chose, you couldn't tell that it wasn't.
I love, love my new table and chairs. The wood feels good under my fingers and the grain just glows, reminding me that this wood was a living thing. Of course, I also value the craftsmanship it takes to transform the wood into a thing of beauty. My only wish might have been to have a better sense of who built the table. While I was waiting for delivery, I liked imagining a human being building it, rather than it coming off an assembly line. I almost wished for a little signature on bottom of the table top, like an artist signing a painting, or maybe a bio of the artisans who worked on the table and chairs. On another note, the customer service was excellent. I got plenty of personalized attention from Shannon, the order coordinator who was assigned to my order. When my furniture was delivered, it was fast and professional. Thanks to all involved.
We love it. Goes great with my other mission furniture. Great craftsmanship.
Dear Gwen,
My husband purchased a light oak mission style dining room set for me for my birthday, and we cannot
begin to thank you for the high quality workmanship, the beautiful finish, and the customer service we
received! Although we had to delay receiving our dining set, the nice people are DutchCrafters assisted
us in rescheduling as we cleaned up from Hurricane Sandy and we received it just in time for the holidays!

Everyone who came to our home commented on how well-made our furniture is, and how absolutely
beautiful the style and finish are ! We are very happy and will definitely recommend both the Amish
craftsmen, the delivery company, and the folks in the office at DutchCrafters, who together, customized
our order, finish, payment plan, and delivery without any problems whatsoever!

BRAVO!

Sincerely,
Lisa
