What is Mission Furniture?
The first mission furniture was based on a chair, found in a Spanish missionary church in San Francisco, CA in the 1890s. The term mission is a nod to the Spanish missionaries who settled in Northern California during those times, however, it has little to do with their culture.
Mission vs. Craftsman vs. Arts & Crafts
Mission furniture became popular during the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 1900s, also known as the American Craftsmen era, bringing attention to high-quality, handmade goods and the people who made them. Because of this, the terms mission furniture, arts & crafts furniture, and craftsman furniture, are forever linked and mostly interchangeable.
Modern Mission Furniture
The mission furniture built today by Our Amish Woodworkers is still heavily inspired by the same chair. Known for their sturdy construction, straight lines, rectangular spindles, and eased edges, each new design has a modern take, bringing new life to this style with each new design.
Create your own custom Twin Lakes Dining Chair by selecting from several domestically sourced American hardwoods. Each wood type is available with a large selection of finish options to match your home's unique style.
